5 Natural Tips for Healthy Nails

Most of us forget that like the rest of the body our nails too reflect our inner health and it is essential that we look after them to keep them strong and healthy. Besides a manicure once in a while, there are not many people who actually take nail care seriously and very often I have seen both men and women suffer from unhealthy, discoloured or chipped nails.

So let’s try and elaborate some of the nail problems that plague many of us and how we tend to ignore them. Nail care is obviously an integral part of hand and foot care. The nail plate from where your nail grows is several millimeters below the base of the nail and it takes about nine months for a new nail to grow - almost as much as a baby!

Nails indicate your state of health just as clearly as the condition of your skin, eyes and hair. Pale nails with vertical ridges indicate anaemia or extreme dryness from using too many detergents. Blue nails point to inefficient circulation and not enough oxygen in your blood. If your nails are thin and constantly breaking, this may indicate inadequate vitamins, minerals and protein as well as insufficient nail care.

Here are 5 quick tips to start taking care of your nails -

1. Strong Nail Diet

Calcium, gelatine and B-complex vitamins are vitally essential for healthy nails. Vitamin Dcures nail ridges, folic acid and Vitamin C cures hangnails and split nails. Nail ridges are cracks in the skin along the sides of the nails that can be particularly painful. Drink diluted cider vinegar to strengthen the nails and paint them with two coats of fresh lemon juice daily to strengthen them externally.

2. Cracked and Chipped Nails

These can be extremely embarrassing and I have seen many women apply nail polish to different nail lengths which look like a complete nightmare. Try the following remedies to keep your nails strong and smooth –

- Warm a little olive oil and use it to massage your nails thrice a week. Doing so will help in strengthening them.
- Never throw away lemon peels after you have squeezed out the juice. Instead, rub them onto your nails daily. This will help reduce yellowness and also make them shiny and smooth.
- Take 3 tsp of vodka with 1 tsp of lemon juice and store in a bottle and rub onto nails and cuticles daily.

3. Cuticle Softener

Fresh pineapple and vinegar helps soften the cuticles. Mash the pineapple and add vinegar to it. Dip the nails up to the cuticles in this mixture, massaging every now and then.

4. The Goodness of Papaya

Papaya contains enzymes that soften the protein tissue and are good for the cuticles. Mash papaya and add lemon juice and 1tsp vodka or vinegar. Soak your nails in this mixture for at least 20 minutes and massage into the skin regularly. This treatment needs to be done daily for atleast 7days for effective results.

5. Callouses and Brittle Nails

Warm 250ml of olive oil or castor oil, add half a cup of sage leaves and heat this mixture for 5 minutes. Let it stand for a while until cool, and then strain it. Rub it frequently into your nails.

There’s another remedy for damaged nail – take 125 ml honey, 1 egg yolk, 125 ml avocado oil or castor oil and 2ml sea salt. Beat the ingredients together and keep in a screw top jar in a refrigerator. Rub into the nails daily, leaving it on for half an hour before washing.

Now that you have some magical remedies to have healthy nails, conjure up these easy to do recipes and take care of them.

5 Tips for Baby's Skin

There's a reason people can't resist stroking babies' faces and nuzzling the tops of their heads. An infant's skin is the ultimate blank slate, free of all the marks we accumulate over a lifetime. When we touch the smooth curve of a baby's forehead, we are filled with a sense of newness and possibility. But baby skin needs more than nuzzling. Sun, pollutants and the very process of living take their toll. But lest you be tempted to overdo it, remember -- with babies, less is best. "The basic rule is don't do anything to aggravate the skin," says Nelson Lee Novick, M.D., author of Baby Skin. "The less you wipe and irritate it, the better." Here's how to give that extra-special skin the protection it deserves.
1. A Bumpy Start
While many organs develop early in pregnancy, it takes almost the full nine months in the womb for a baby's skin to mature. "What we think of as normal skin is formed in the last trimester," explains Seth Orlow, M.D., Ph.D., professor of pediatric dermatology at New York University Langone Medical Center. Even so, a new baby looks less like someone in a Dove commercial and more like a kid who's crawled out of a Clearasil ad. Infant acne -- tiny pink bumps on a baby's face and chest -- usually occurs in a fifth of all newborns in their first month of life. The culprit is mom's hormones in baby's body after birth.
Baby That Skin: Unlike adult acne, infant acne requires no special care. Just keep your baby's skin clean and dry, and don't squeeze the pimples -- it could lead to scarring -- or apply any lotions or treatments. The acne should resolve after several weeks but may last longer in breastfed babies. If the problem persists for more than three months, worsens, or seems itchy or uncomfortable, it may be something different -- eczema, for example -- and you should contact your pediatrician.
2. Bath Basics
Ours is a culture obsessed with cleanliness, which means that parents tend to overdo it when it comes to bathing their beauties. Dips in the tub aren't advised until the umbilical stump falls off and until a boy's circumcision heals. Until then, a gentle sponge bath of the bottom and genitals is plenty.
Baby That Skin: When tub time does roll around, go easy on the suds, especially if your little one has a rash of any kind. Give your baby a tub bath twice a week until she starts eating solids and crawling -- getting dirtier. Soap can irritate baby's skin, so skip it or choose mild, scent-free products. Whatever you use, "Stick with it to limit the variety of chemicals you expose your baby to," advises Alfred Lane, M.D., professor of dermatology and pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine.
3. Wash and Wear
Babies, especially newborns, tend to have sensitive skin, so the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends washing new clothing and towels before using them. Although there are special "baby" laundry detergents, which leave less residue after washing, it's perfectly fine to use regular detergents.
Baby That Skin: Skin conditions are often genetic, so if you have sensitive skin, your baby might too. If your child develops irritation or a rash on body parts that his clothes come in contact with, your detergent could be to blame. Try switching to a milder baby detergent or one that is "free and clear" of allergens, dyes and fragrances.
4. Here Comes the Sun
Your first thought is probably to slather your little bundle in sunscreen. But for babies under 6 months, that's not a good idea. Babies have more skin surface than adults, so they receive a higher dose of chemicals. This increases the odds of an adverse reaction, according to Jennifer Shu, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician and co-author ofHeading Home with Your Newborn. Instead, keep babies under 6 months in the shade and use protective clothing.
Baby That Skin: When choosing a sunscreen, pick one with the highest sun protection factor (SPF) available, with SPF 30 being the minimum, Dr. Shu says. Look for the words "broad-spectrum" on the label. That means it will block both UVA and UVB rays. Try a sunblock with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which offer the best protection and are unlikely to cause allergic reactions. If your baby is older than 6 months, it's OK to cover her entire body with sunscreen.
5. The Bottom Side
Chances are you've already encountered a diaper rash -- and if you haven't, you will. The materials that keep diapers from leaking also prevent air from circulating, creating the perfect environment for a rash to breed.
Baby That Skin: The cleaner and drier baby's bottom, the less likely his skin will become irritated. Clean baby with water and a washcloth or baby wipe during every diaper change, then allow his skin to dry completely before applying a diaper cream that contains moisture-blocking zinc oxide. Also, give baby some diaper-free time on a towel a few minutes every day.

9 Tips For Finding The Perfect Summer Foundation

On hot, humid, and sticky days, the last thing on your mind is slathering on skin-smothering foundation. It’s equally as daunting is finding the right formula—especially if you’re new to the makeup game. But no need to sweat (no pun intended, we promise!) because we caught up with a trio of talented makeup experts to fill us in. Now, looking great at any temperature will be a summer breeze.

Lean Towards a Liquid
“A liquid foundation is the easiest form of a complexion product to apply—especially if you are just starting to wear foundation,” shares Urban Decay Product Development Director, Amy Zunzunegui. “Liquids can easily be applied with your fingers, a sponge, a brush, etc. [The beauty of liquid formulas] is that they can be applied sheerer or heavier depending on how much coverage you want.”

You’ll Have to Test a Few
“There is no reason to pile on foundation. If you feel like you have cake frosting on your face, chances are, you have way too much makeup on,” shares Alexys Fleming of MadeYewLook and former NYX FACE Awards finalist. “Remember, your skin is your largest organ and you need to take care of it! For example, a concealer can be dotted on areas you want to cover up (any spots that bother you), while a foundation can simply even out your skin tone with a little amount.”

BB and CC Creams Are in Their Own Category
“CC creams can carry benefits that a typical foundation may not, such as color-correcting pigments, SPF, and built-in primer,” explains makeup artist Nicky Posley who’s clients include Brandy Norwood. “In theory, a BB cream is the most sheer in terms of coverage and is closer to a primer,” adds Zunzunegui.
But Don’t Forget About Other Versions
“Creams, liquids, and mousse are great for ‘normal/combination’ skin, meaning if you are having a little oil and a little dryness, you’ll love these!” explains Fleming. “For skin that is oily, powders will be your new best friend, literally. Drier skin types will do well with mousse and creams, but you may feel like powders will make you feel a little dry. However, you can always touch up any shiny spots with powders to take that shine away. Most importantly, as a beginner, remember you don’t need to put a ton on—a little goes a long way!”
Different Application Methods Yield Different Results
“A different applicator can give you a different finish or level of coverage even when using the same product,” says Zunzunegui. “I love applying foundation with my fingers to really get into all of the fine lines, but then buffing it out with Urban Decay’s Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush to give my skin a blown-out effect.”

Create Your Own Version
“You can create a lightweight foundation blend at home by mixing together your favorite moisturizer and your favorite foundation,” explains Fleming. “If you want a lighter coverage, mix more moisturizer than foundation. For more coverage, mix more foundation than moisturizer. By doing this, you will also be getting your skin care benefits of your moisturizer while covering any spots that bother you!”
You Can Still Cover Up Acne
“I recommend using something more sheer as an all-over solution, then targeting problem areas with concealer,” says Posley. “It pays to try different formulas if possible to really customize your own personal routine—there so many options available to try.” Fleming adds “Acne is a very sensitive thing. Sometimes acne loves to flare, other times it goes away and seems like it will never come back. Wearing a lightweight foundation will not kill you—or your skin. If you are working with proper skin care, mixing your moisturizer and your foundation together can have a great benefit to your skin.”

So, wash day is here and you thoroughly wash, condition, and detangle those tresses. You choose the best products and styling tools to make sure your curls are popping, and they look fabulous. But then your hair dries and your curls are frizzy, undefined, and no longer cooperate. You probably did not notice that your drying technique plays a proper role in how your curls form and how long your hairstyle lasts. Drying techniques can eliminate frizz, reduce tangles, and prevent breakage. Are you interested in a new drying technique or want to revamp your current one? Check these out!

Plopping

Plopping is a simple and super affordable method to drying your curls. All you need is an old t-shirt. While your hair is wet, simply tie an old t-shirt around your hair. That is all! Plopping expedites your drying time and reduces frizz. It is best to not dry your curls with a towel because it can cause frizz. Another plus is that your movement is not restricted. You can plop your curls, do homework assignments, or finish house cleaning. Sarah, also know as Waterlily716, shows us how she plops her curls with a long sleeve t-shirt.

Diffusing

Diffusing is a quick way to dry your curls, especially before leaving the house. You will have to purchase a diffuser attachment at your local beauty supply store if your blow-dryer did not come with one. If you are looking for volume, this is the technique for you! Simply apply your favorite leave-in conditioner and styler to your hair and use the diffuser as if you are scrunching. Flip your hair upside down for more volume. Volume queen Taren Guy shows us how she diffuses her hair.

Air-Drying

Air-drying is also a simple technique. After you rinse your conditioner, apply your favorite products with whatever technique that you use (rake, smooth, etc.) and that is all! If you plan to lounge around the house for awhile, then place a t-shirt around your neck to catch the dripping water and product. Just let your hair dry. Although it may be difficult, try to avoid touching your curls while drying, as this can cause frizz. However, one thing that you have to remember with air-drying is that drying time will vary. Alba, also know as SunKiss Alba, shows how she styles her hair and how she uses the air-drying technique.

Microfiber Towels and Gloves

The DevaCurl DevaTowel and DevaCurl DevaGloves have microfiber fabric that you can use to dry your hair. The gloves are simple to use. After you rinse your condition, flip your head upside down and scrunch your curls to remove excess water from your hair and add volume. Then, continue with desired hairstyle. The microfiber will help to reduce the amount of frizz and the scrunching method will help to keep your curls defined. The Devachan Salon and Spa shows how to use the DevaCurl Towel and DevaCurl DevaGloves.

How to Care for Wavy and Curly Hair

What most people who don’t have curly hair don’t understand about it is the amount of work involved. There’s nothing prettier than a mop of bouncy, perfectly defined ringlets, but getting curly hair to look gorgeous on a daily basis takes dedication — and how you care for curls depends on what type of texture you have. We asked two texture experts — Morgan Willhite, Creative Director at Ouidad, and Tippi Shorter, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Textured Hair — to school us in the basic care and feeding of curly hair.
Check ULTA Styling Producsts with  ULTA 20 off entire purchase.
The One Thing All Curly Hair Needs

For every type of curly hair, conditioning is priority number one. “Curly and coily hair don’t get the natural scalp oils that straight and wavy hair get,” says Shorter, because “curls and texture don’t allow for constant brushing, which is how natural scalp oils moisturize hair.”

Willhite agrees. “More than any other hair type, curls must be conditioned regularly,” she explains. “In fact, even the simple act of shampooing dehydrates curls; the warm water opens the cuticle, allowing the cleansers to flow into the hair shaft and rinse out many of the nutrients. It’s the same thing that happens to your skin after washing your hands – they just feel dry. This is why frequent conditioning should be an automatic part of a curly girl’s hair care regimen.”

Both experts recommend regular, twice monthly deep conditioning treatments to keep curls in healthy shape. “I recommend using the Ouidad Deep Treatment Intensive Conditioner [$26, ouidad.com] at least twice a month to combat curl-aggressors like the wind, air conditionings, and blow-drying,” Willhite says. Shorter swears by Aveda’s Dry Remedy Moisturizing Treatment Masque ($29, aveda.com). “It provides extraordinary moisture and suppleness to instantly transform even the driest, most brittle hair without weighing it down,” she says.

Wavy to Loose Curly Hair

What it looks like: “Soft, less defined waves that are approximately 2” wide. Hair is curlier with length,” Willhite says.

What it needs: Loose curls and waves have the tendency to fall flat. “I recommend products that will add life to those looser curls and waves,” Willhite says.

Shorter adds, “You may need a mousse or light gel to combat frizz when styling.”

Products to try: A volumizing shampoo and conditioner, such as Ouidad PlayCurl Volumzing Shampoo ($16) and Conditioner ($18) helps give loose curls and waves needed bounce.

Style hair with an ultra-light mousse to define curls and fight frizz. Moroccanoil Curl Control Mousse ($23.20, moroccanoil.com) won’t weigh down waves.

Add a curl-enhancing mist for hold and extra definition. Fekkai Perfectly Luscious Curls Wave Activating Spray ($25, fekkai.com) helps lock in texture.

Medium Curly Hair

What it looks like: Willhite says, “Hair that is ‘classically’ curly has wide curls with good definition, bounce and lots of volume. Occasionally two types of medium curls are found on one head, a bigger, looser curl mixed with tighter ringlets.”

What it needs: “Curly hair is usually soft to the touch, but needs a moisturizing system to keep hair smooth and healthy,” says Shorter. “As for styling, you will need products to keep hair defined and frizz free.”

“Classic curls should not use a brush or comb on dry curls which will cause the hair to expand and contribute to frizz,” Willhite points out.

Products to try: To keep curls hydrated, use a light lathering, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as DevaCurl Low-Poo Cleanser ($18.95) and One Condition ($18.95, devachansalon.com).

Aveda Be Curly Curl Controller ($21, aveda.com) is a light lotion that defines and softens curls. “The consistency is a serum-like cream that glides easily through all types of curly hair,” says Shorter. “The hair dries soft and touchable with a generous shine.”

Paul Mitchell Twirl Around Crunch-Free Curl Definer ($27.50, paulmitchell.com) combines a frizz-fighting gel formula with a moisturizing cream to help coax curly hair into perfect spirals.

Tight Curly to Kinky Hair

What it looks like: Tight curly hair is “a mixture of 1/2″ to 1″ wide curls throughout the hair,” while kinky texture features “tiny ringlets of mostly Z-shaped hair when stretched,” says Willhite.

What it needs: The curliest type of hair is also the most prone to dryness and damage, so deep conditioning treatments are important. “It generally doesn’t have the protective layer that all other types have, so hair is much more fragile,” Shorter explains.

Willhite says, “I recommend sleeping on a satin pillowcase to reduce tangles. Also, air drying tight curls or using a hair dryer on low heat with a diffuser works best for this type.”

Products to try: Since tight curly hair is so dry, you can skip shampoo and just wash with conditioner. Try L’Oréal Paris EverCurl Hydracharge Cleansing Conditioner ($6.99, lorealparisusa.com) for a non-lathering option.

A leave-in conditioning product can also help moisturize curls and downplay frizz. Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Original Leave-In Moisturizer ($20, carolsdaughter.com) has cocoa and shea butters to nourish parched hair.

Once a week in the shower, use a hair mask such as Ojon Dry Recovery Intensive Hydrating 2-Minute Hair Mask ($29.50, ojon.com).

How to Wash Your Hair

You may do it practically every day, but do you really know how to wash your hair the right way? Using the correct techniques can make a world of difference in your hair’s health, bounce and shine — but if you’re making some common mistakes, you could be damaging your strands without even knowing it. We asked two of New York’s foremost hair pros, hair stylist Nunzio Saviano of Nunzio Saviano Salon in New York and Kyle White, lead colorist at Oscar Blandi Salon, to share their best tips for lathering up, the right way wwith ULTA 20 off entire purchase.
1. Start with a rinse.
Just like your laundry needs a rinse cycle before you add detergent, hair should be thoroughly wet before you add your shampoo. “Hot water will open the cuticle, which is good for removing any dirt or product trapped in the hair,” says White. Another bonus: “When your hair is rinsed in warm water, it loosens the oils through the scalp and opens the cuticle so it is able to absorb the oil” in your conditioner, says Saviano.
2. If you have long hair, condition first.
Yes, really! “If you have hair beneath the shoulders, protect fragile ends from drying out and further damage by running a small amount of conditioner through them and lightly rinsing, before any shampooing. This will not only keep ends healthy, it will fill any holes in the cuticle with moisture, making it smoother and boosting shine,” says White.
3. Lather up — but only at the scalp.
“You only need to shampoo the hair at the scalp, particularly at the nape,” Saviano says.
White agrees. “The best way to lather up is from roots to ends. The hair closest to the scalp is the youngest and will inevitably be the oiliest, while the end of the hair is the oldest and usually driest, most fragile part of the hair.”
Don’t use more shampoo than you need; both Saviano and White say that a quarter-sized amount of shampoo is enough. If your hair is particularly long or thick, go ahead and double that.
4. Be gentle!
Friction can permanently damage your hair’s cuticle, leading to breakage and frizz. Think about washing your hair like you hand wash your delicates — very carefully.
“Start your lather at the roots,” says White. “Increase blood flow to the scalp and stimulate hair growth by using vertical strokes with medium pressure.” Don’t use circular motions, which can tangle your hair.
Next, “Smooth the lather over the ends in a straight stroking motion,” White advises. “Do not scrub the fragile ends or use a back and forth motion like you’re washing a rag on a washboard.”
5. Don’t rinse and repeat.
Despite what the instructions on the back of your shampoo bottle may say, there’s no need to wash your hair twice. “Avoid stripping the hair by doing one shampoo only, which is usually sufficient,” says White. “Unless the hair is extremely dirty and the first shampoo didn’t produce a lather,” in which case, go ahead and lather up one more time.
6. Add conditioner from the mid-lengths to the tips.
After you’ve rinsed out your shampoo, “squeeze some of the water out of the hair before you put in the conditioner,” says Saviano. “Then clip your hair up and finish showering, leaving the conditioner rinse out for the final step of your shower.” The longer the conditioner stays on your hair, the better it absorbs. Don’t put conditioner at the roots of your hair; the natural oil from your scalp is more concentrated there.
7. Finish with a cold water rinse.
“Cold water will shut the cuticle tight, sealing the shingle-like outer layer, which will cause it to reflect the most light and give off the most shine,” says White.
More Hair Washing Tips
Use a shampoo and conditioner that’s made for your hair type. If your hair is dry, choose moisturizing products. If you color your hair, opt for color-safe formulas. “Volumizing” shampoos tend to leave hair drier, so they’re best for fine hair types that would be weighed down by more moisturizing products.
How often you wash your hair depends on your hair type, too. If you have oily or fine hair, you may need to shampoo daily. Normal or dry hair can lather up closer to three times a week.
Filter your water. White recommends using a shower filter, such as the ULTA 20 off entire purchase  since it “removes rust and minerals from water that can dull color, and deposit on blondes making them dark and muddy.” (We’ve tried it, and it also made our hair super soft.)

How to Have Soft Shiny Hair Inexpensively

  1. Don't use products that contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Ammonium Laureth Sulfate. This is especially important if you have curly hair. Look closely at the labels of shampoos and conditioners before you purchase and use them.
    • Although Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is derived from palm and coconut oil, it has been linked to skin irritation and hair loss. It is also used as an industrial-grade cleanser.
    • On the other hand, mild cleansers aren't likely to get rid of silicone or wax. So make sure that you don't get silicone or wax into your luscious locks!
    • Try looking for shampoos and conditioners with natural and organic ingredients. Natural ingredients will restore natural oils to your hair.
  2. 2
Don't wash out all of your conditioner. If someone ever told you "wash it til it squeaks," that person was wrong. When you are washing it out, wash it out until it still feels like there is a bit in there and then (without touching) pour cold water over your head with the shower head. Don't rinse anymore or run your fingers through it. Just pour.
    • Leave-in conditioners are also widely available. Spray it in your hair after you've shampooed and showered, and leave it in until the next time you shower.
    • Some leave-in conditioners help you style your style in addition to adding hydration. They are essentially a frizz-control agent. Just make sure that your hair isn't weighed-down and greasy after application.
  3. 3
Avoid non-organic styling chemicals as much as possible. Dyes and relaxers can be very bad for your hair. If you feel like you have to do it, make sure not to leave the chemicals in your hair too long. Apply sparingly to prevent hair damage. Read the product's instructions to see how often you're supposed to wait between treatments.
    • Keratin treatments, or Brazilian hair blowouts, can be especially damaging to your hair. They contain high levels of formaldehyde[1] and can make your hair fall out.[2]
  4. 4
Avoid too many sessions with the straightener. You may love your straightened hair, but your hair does not love your flat iron. Straighteners can overheat and damage your hair, leaving it dry and brittle.
