Most of us have a bunch of lipsticks in our beauty bag, some that we wear all the time, some that never get touched. There's a reason for that. You may have fallen in love with a lipstick in the store or on Beyonce’s face, but when you put it on yourself? It just doesn't work.

1. Identify Your Undertone

First, the basics. Everyone’s skin has undertones of either yellow or pink. Yellow is warmer, pink is cooler. Knowing your undertone is enormously helpful when you're trying to figure out which lipsticks look best on you.
A quick way to identify your skin's undertone is to look at the veins on your wrist. If they are blue, and you also tend to gravitate towards wearing blues, whites, and grays, you’ve got pink undertones. If your veins appear more green, you have a warmer yellow undertone. If they appear to be both blue and green, you are the lucky owner of a neutral skin tone (meaning equal pink and yellow tones), and you can wear any color.
Still unsure? Hold a piece of gold jewelry and a piece of silver jewelry up to your face. Ignoring your personal preference, assess which looks better with your skin — cooler (pink) tones go better with silver jewelry, whereas warm (yellow) skin tones work better with gold.

2. Know Which Shades Work With Your Undertone

You want to focus on shades similar to your undertone when choosing a lipstick, says Mann. “For yellow undertones, stick to warmer colors and for pink undertones, look for shades with blue or purple tones in them.”
And everyone should avoid lipstick colors with a gray, ashy or overly pale feel, Mann says. “These can often make the skin look sickly or unhealthy and are universally unflattering.”

3. When in Doubt, Pick Based on Your Skin Tone

To simplify the process, you can also stick to shades that typically suit olive, fair and darker skin tones.
Olive skin tones are generally neutral, so it's hard for you to go wrong. “Most nude, pink, orange, and red shades are going to look good on you,” Mann says. “Look at what you are wearing to determine your lip shade. For an outfit with warmer colors, you’d stick to a warmer, bright lipstick.”
“The great thing about really fair skin is that bold reds and deep colors can be a fun way to play up your makeup and can look fantastic,” explains Mann. “Avoid anything too light or with too much of a yellow undertone so you don’t look washed out.”

Deep plums, berries and reds look fantastic,” says Mann. “Unless you are going for a retro feel or a statement bright lip, avoid anything too light or pale on the lips — deeper shades look more naturally flattering.”
Of course, regardless of your tone and undertone, it’s up to you to decide what looks best and most flattering on yourself: “If you love bright orange lipstick and it makes you happy, of course you should wear it!” Mann exclaims. Hear, hear.

STYLING PRODUCT SAVVY HELPS RESTORE DAMAGED HAIR

Hot water can damage hair, so wash your hair with lukewarm or cool water, and finish the shampoo process with a shot of cool water. Cool or cold water can help damaged hair by closing the hair cuticle and causing the hair shafts to lie flat, resulting in shinier, smoother hair.

If your hair has damage due to build-up from product, hard water deposits and minerals, a good clarifying shampoo can help. How frequently you need to remove build-up depends on how hard the water is that comes from your tap, and the products you use on your hair. Build-up is a serious issue and can cause damaged hair to be limp and lifeless and cause the ends to split and feel brittle. Typically, a clarifying shampoo and treatment should be used just once or twice a month.

When selecting a conditioner for damaged hair, look for those with moisturizers such as aloe vera, glycerol, panthenol or proteins. Active components such as macadamia nut oil, argan oil or shea butter coat each strand of hair with a fine protective layer that helps repair the cuticle. This helps damaged hair look healthier and thicker.

    6. STYLING PRODUCT SAVVY HELPS RESTORE DAMAGED HAIR

When restoring damaged hair, keep hairstyles simple and stick to those that don’t require a lot of product to hold them in place. Applying a leave-in fortifying spray on wet hair is a good way to prepare the hair for styling or the stress of the day and protect it from environmental factors. A detangling spray can help protect damaged hair while brushing. Spritz it on before brushing wet hair to avoid further damage to tresses.

When you do use styling products, check the labels so that you know what they contain. Stay away from hair products that have high levels of alcohol or peroxide, and stick with products that are gentle.

Use a light oil, pomade, mousse or gel to control frizz, and look for styling products that will reinforce damaged hair by infusing protein, amino acids and other strengthening properties. If necessary, finish with a light hairspray.

    7. Bringing Out the Big Guns: Use Treatment Masks to Rescue Damaged Hair

When shopping for a hydrating treatment for damaged hair, look for products that have restorative, moisturizing ingredients, such as olive oil, keratin, protein or shea butter, and avoid products that contain silicone or parabens. Twice a week, apply the treatment or mask and leave it on for a full hour, using a plastic shower cap to help the product penetrate. Additionally, once a week you can apply the treatment in the shower after shampooing. Leave it on for three to five minutes for quick hydration and then rinse it out.

Oil treatments are another option to repair dry, damaged hair. They are simple to do at home and infuse damaged hair with moisture and shine. Apply the treatment oil of choice to clean, towel-dried hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic wrap, and apply heat by sitting in the sun, using a hot towel or using your blow dryer. After heating the oil, allow hair to cool at room temperature, and then rinse with cool water. Reparative oil treatments can be done one to three times per month on damaged hair depending upon need. Proper use of these treatments can increase elasticity to damaged hair and create sheen. But be careful--overuse might cause your hair to look greasy with ULTA Hair Care Products

    8. Protect Your Damaged Hair In the Pool and Under the Sun

Are you a swimmer? Then always wear a swim cap in the pool. Chlorine causes hair damage that builds up over time. If you do go swimming without a cap, wash the chlorine out right away with a gentle shampoo.
Don’t sit in the sun after swimming without a cap or hat; the sun’s rays will compound the damage to your hair done by chlorine. Or, wash your hair before you sunbathe if you’ve been in the pool and use sunscreen on your part to avoid burning and peeling on your scalp line. Although the sun’s exposure is more intense during the summer months, it shines all year round. After a long day in the sun due to an athletic event, a hike or a day at the beach, consider giving your hair a hydrating treatment to avoid additional hair damage.
Signs of sun damage to your hair can include dry hair with brittle or broken ends, faded hair color, frizz and weakened or thinning hair.

    9. Body Health Leads to Hair Health

Maintaining good overall health can help damaged hair get healthy along with the rest of your being. As with your entire body, your hair is affected by what you eat and drink. Make sure to consume lots of water, vitamins and essential nutrients. A diet rich in lean meats and other proteins, vegetables, fruits and low-fat dairy help keeps hair happy.
Omega-3 fatty acids are good for hair and skin and can be found in salmon, walnuts and flaxseeds. Fruits and vegetables such as spinach, kale, carrots and avocados also target hair health.
Supplements can help fill in the gaps for a less-than-perfect diet and get your damaged hair onto the road to recovery. You can even try taking prenatal supplements to promote healthy hair growth.

9 Ways to Repair, Treat & Fix Damaged Hair

Sadly, hair can be damaged relatively quickly, but bringing it back to good health can take some time. Don’t fret: the pros at Matrix offer tips on how to restore your damaged hair tresses as lickety-split as possible. Check ULTA Styling Producsts with  ULTA 20 off entire purchase.

    1. Early Detection is Key to Fix Damaged Hair
Is your hair dry and dull? Do you have split ends and frizz? Scalp acting weird? If so, you have damaged hair, but the good news is that it’s not too late to begin the healing process. There are techniques and treatments for damaged hair, as well as gentle shampoos, conditioners and styling products to help bring those wrecked tresses back to life. Start these healthy new habits now to help your damaged hair look better in the short run, while bringing it back to good health in the long run.

    2. A Good Trim Can Revive Damaged Hair!
If your damaged hair has a straw-like texture and good hair days are a thing of the past, the first thing you can do to make it look better and restore body is to get a trim. To accomplish good results, you don’t have to get a super short cut; you can leave some length and treat the remaining damaged hair. If you are bold enough to chop it all off, a short bob or cute pixie can undo all the damage in one clean sweep.
If you don’t want to go this extreme, however, a healthy trim with layers may be the direction to go to help your damaged locks look their best. This should be followed by a health care regimen for damaged hair, including use of a restorative shampoo, conditioner and styling products. Hair tends to be most damaged toward the tips; it’s been around the longest and had more time to be affected by the elements, styling products and processing, and other damage-causing sources.

    3. Nix Hot Styling Tools When Hair is Damaged
Blow dryers, curling irons or straightening irons damage hair. Whenever possible, air dry your hair and don’t use irons on it. After using a mild shampoo and conditioner, apply a restorative styling treatment and let damaged hair dry naturally. If you really need to blow dry your hair, keep it on the lowest heat setting.
If you must use heat, prepare the hair with a fortifying leave-in conditioner, and finish with a protective spray. And make sure that the hair is completely dry before using heated tools like flat irons and curling irons so it won’t cook from the inside out.

    4. Say ‘Bye-Bye’ to Chemicals, & Hair Color, At Least for Now
If your hair is extremely damaged, reconsider chemical processing for the moment.  Certain types of hair color—like harsh bleaches--can damage hair or stress hair that is already damaged.  Talk to your stylist about gentler approaches to hair color, such as ammonia-free and demi-permanent formulas.  Likewise, discuss healthier alternatives to permanent waves or straighteners—which can also be damaging to hair. Temporary smoother formulas, for example, eliminate frizz, control curl and prolong the life of a blow-dry.  A strong setting lotion or spray used with Velcro rollers can produce curl or body with minimal impact on hair health.

    5. Shampoo and Conditioner Know-How For Damaged Hair

Carefully select a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner formulated for damaged hair. Sticking with shampoos and conditioners that contain natural oils and herbs will help repair your damaged hair.

Avoid shampoos or conditioners that contain sodium laurel or laureth sulfates; these ingredients can strip your hair of its natural protective oils.

And don’t shampoo more than twice a week if possible. Shampooing too frequently can strip damaged hair and create brittleness. If your hair needs a pick-me-up, use a dry shampoo in between washings.

How to Care for Wavy and Curly Hair

What most people who don’t have curly hair don’t understand about it is the amount of work involved. There’s nothing prettier than a mop of bouncy, perfectly defined ringlets, but getting curly hair to look gorgeous on a daily basis takes dedication — and how you care for curls depends on what type of texture you have. We asked two texture experts — Morgan Willhite, Creative Director at Ouidad, and Tippi Shorter, Aveda Global Artistic Director for Textured Hair — to school us in the basic care and feeding of curly hair.
Check ULTA Styling Producsts with  ULTA 20 off entire purchase.
The One Thing All Curly Hair Needs

For every type of curly hair, conditioning is priority number one. “Curly and coily hair don’t get the natural scalp oils that straight and wavy hair get,” says Shorter, because “curls and texture don’t allow for constant brushing, which is how natural scalp oils moisturize hair.”

Willhite agrees. “More than any other hair type, curls must be conditioned regularly,” she explains. “In fact, even the simple act of shampooing dehydrates curls; the warm water opens the cuticle, allowing the cleansers to flow into the hair shaft and rinse out many of the nutrients. It’s the same thing that happens to your skin after washing your hands – they just feel dry. This is why frequent conditioning should be an automatic part of a curly girl’s hair care regimen.”

Both experts recommend regular, twice monthly deep conditioning treatments to keep curls in healthy shape. “I recommend using the Ouidad Deep Treatment Intensive Conditioner [$26, ouidad.com] at least twice a month to combat curl-aggressors like the wind, air conditionings, and blow-drying,” Willhite says. Shorter swears by Aveda’s Dry Remedy Moisturizing Treatment Masque ($29, aveda.com). “It provides extraordinary moisture and suppleness to instantly transform even the driest, most brittle hair without weighing it down,” she says.

    Wavy to Loose Curly Hair

What it looks like: “Soft, less defined waves that are approximately 2” wide. Hair is curlier with length,” Willhite says.

What it needs: Loose curls and waves have the tendency to fall flat. “I recommend products that will add life to those looser curls and waves,” Willhite says.

Shorter adds, “You may need a mousse or light gel to combat frizz when styling.”

Products to try: A volumizing shampoo and conditioner, such as Ouidad PlayCurl Volumzing Shampoo ($16) and Conditioner ($18) helps give loose curls and waves needed bounce.

Style hair with an ultra-light mousse to define curls and fight frizz. Moroccanoil Curl Control Mousse ($23.20, moroccanoil.com) won’t weigh down waves.

Add a curl-enhancing mist for hold and extra definition. Fekkai Perfectly Luscious Curls Wave Activating Spray ($25, fekkai.com) helps lock in texture.

    Medium Curly Hair

What it looks like: Willhite says, “Hair that is ‘classically’ curly has wide curls with good definition, bounce and lots of volume. Occasionally two types of medium curls are found on one head, a bigger, looser curl mixed with tighter ringlets.”

What it needs: “Curly hair is usually soft to the touch, but needs a moisturizing system to keep hair smooth and healthy,” says Shorter. “As for styling, you will need products to keep hair defined and frizz free.”

“Classic curls should not use a brush or comb on dry curls which will cause the hair to expand and contribute to frizz,” Willhite points out.

Products to try: To keep curls hydrated, use a light lathering, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as DevaCurl Low-Poo Cleanser ($18.95) and One Condition ($18.95, devachansalon.com).

Aveda Be Curly Curl Controller ($21, aveda.com) is a light lotion that defines and softens curls. “The consistency is a serum-like cream that glides easily through all types of curly hair,” says Shorter. “The hair dries soft and touchable with a generous shine.”

Paul Mitchell Twirl Around Crunch-Free Curl Definer ($27.50, paulmitchell.com) combines a frizz-fighting gel formula with a moisturizing cream to help coax curly hair into perfect spirals.

    Tight Curly to Kinky Hair

What it looks like: Tight curly hair is “a mixture of 1/2″ to 1″ wide curls throughout the hair,” while kinky texture features “tiny ringlets of mostly Z-shaped hair when stretched,” says Willhite.

What it needs: The curliest type of hair is also the most prone to dryness and damage, so deep conditioning treatments are important. “It generally doesn’t have the protective layer that all other types have, so hair is much more fragile,” Shorter explains.

Willhite says, “I recommend sleeping on a satin pillowcase to reduce tangles. Also, air drying tight curls or using a hair dryer on low heat with a diffuser works best for this type.”

Products to try: Since tight curly hair is so dry, you can skip shampoo and just wash with conditioner. Try L’Oréal Paris EverCurl Hydracharge Cleansing Conditioner ($6.99, lorealparisusa.com) for a non-lathering option.

A leave-in conditioning product can also help moisturize curls and downplay frizz. Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Original Leave-In Moisturizer ($20, carolsdaughter.com) has cocoa and shea butters to nourish parched hair.

Once a week in the shower, use a hair mask such as Ojon Dry Recovery Intensive Hydrating 2-Minute Hair Mask ($29.50, ojon.com).

    How to Wrap Black Hair

Hair wrapping is a popular styling technique for black women that can be done to any type or length of hair. Wraps are typically done either to protect hair while sleeping or as an alternative to blow drying. Wrapping is done by smoothing hair against the scalp and wrapping it in a circular motion around the head to create a beehive style. The wrap is secured into place and covered with a scarf. Hair wrapping is designed to protect African American hair from damage and is most effective when applied to straight black, relaxed hair

Basic Steps for Wrapping Black Hair

Although there are various renditions of the hair wrap, there are two main types of hair wrapping: dry hair wraps and wet hair wraps.

    Dry Hair Wraps

Dry hair wraps are the most common types of wraps and are done to dry, styled hair at night to protect hair while sleeping. This wrapping method prevents naturally coarse, dry and brittle African American hair from pulling, snagging or falling out while sleeping. Hair wraps allow hair to stay fresh for the next day so you can comb your hair and go, without having to use harsh heat styling to fix messy morning hair. The basic technique for dry wrapping hair is simple:
    1. Divide straight, dry hair down the middle of the scalp, into two sections and comb completely to remove any knots.
    2. Take one section of hair, beginning in the back, and comb it around the front of your forehead. Pull hair in a circular motion so it wraps around the head and secure down with a hair clip.
    3. Repeat the process on the remaining section of hair, combing this section of hair in the opposite direction.
    4. Tie a silk scarf, or a silk wrap cap, around the head so it stays in place. It's important to use silk scarves for dry wraps as this will prevent hair from pulling and snagging during sleep. An easy way to tie a scarf is to lay a square, silk scarf directly on top of the head and gently pull the corners of the scarf towards the forehead. Take all of the ends of the scarf and tie a knot in the front, and tuck under any loose ends of the scarf so they are hidden and secure.

    How to Wash Your Hair

You may do it practically every day, but do you really know how to wash your hair the right way? Using the correct techniques can make a world of difference in your hair’s health, bounce and shine — but if you’re making some common mistakes, you could be damaging your strands without even knowing it. We asked two of New York’s foremost hair pros, hair stylist Nunzio Saviano of Nunzio Saviano Salon in New York and Kyle White, lead colorist at Oscar Blandi Salon, to share their best tips for lathering up, the right way wwith ULTA 20 off entire purchase.
    1. Start with a rinse.
Just like your laundry needs a rinse cycle before you add detergent, hair should be thoroughly wet before you add your shampoo. “Hot water will open the cuticle, which is good for removing any dirt or product trapped in the hair,” says White. Another bonus: “When your hair is rinsed in warm water, it loosens the oils through the scalp and opens the cuticle so it is able to absorb the oil” in your conditioner, says Saviano.
    2. If you have long hair, condition first.
Yes, really! “If you have hair beneath the shoulders, protect fragile ends from drying out and further damage by running a small amount of conditioner through them and lightly rinsing, before any shampooing. This will not only keep ends healthy, it will fill any holes in the cuticle with moisture, making it smoother and boosting shine,” says White.
    3. Lather up — but only at the scalp.
“You only need to shampoo the hair at the scalp, particularly at the nape,” Saviano says.
White agrees. “The best way to lather up is from roots to ends. The hair closest to the scalp is the youngest and will inevitably be the oiliest, while the end of the hair is the oldest and usually driest, most fragile part of the hair.”
Don’t use more shampoo than you need; both Saviano and White say that a quarter-sized amount of shampoo is enough. If your hair is particularly long or thick, go ahead and double that.
    4. Be gentle!
Friction can permanently damage your hair’s cuticle, leading to breakage and frizz. Think about washing your hair like you hand wash your delicates — very carefully.
“Start your lather at the roots,” says White. “Increase blood flow to the scalp and stimulate hair growth by using vertical strokes with medium pressure.” Don’t use circular motions, which can tangle your hair.
Next, “Smooth the lather over the ends in a straight stroking motion,” White advises. “Do not scrub the fragile ends or use a back and forth motion like you’re washing a rag on a washboard.”
    5. Don’t rinse and repeat.
Despite what the instructions on the back of your shampoo bottle may say, there’s no need to wash your hair twice. “Avoid stripping the hair by doing one shampoo only, which is usually sufficient,” says White. “Unless the hair is extremely dirty and the first shampoo didn’t produce a lather,” in which case, go ahead and lather up one more time.
    6. Add conditioner from the mid-lengths to the tips.
After you’ve rinsed out your shampoo, “squeeze some of the water out of the hair before you put in the conditioner,” says Saviano. “Then clip your hair up and finish showering, leaving the conditioner rinse out for the final step of your shower.” The longer the conditioner stays on your hair, the better it absorbs. Don’t put conditioner at the roots of your hair; the natural oil from your scalp is more concentrated there.
    7. Finish with a cold water rinse.
“Cold water will shut the cuticle tight, sealing the shingle-like outer layer, which will cause it to reflect the most light and give off the most shine,” says White.
    More Hair Washing Tips
Use a shampoo and conditioner that’s made for your hair type. If your hair is dry, choose moisturizing products. If you color your hair, opt for color-safe formulas. “Volumizing” shampoos tend to leave hair drier, so they’re best for fine hair types that would be weighed down by more moisturizing products.
How often you wash your hair depends on your hair type, too. If you have oily or fine hair, you may need to shampoo daily. Normal or dry hair can lather up closer to three times a week.
Filter your water. White recommends using a shower filter, such as the ULTA 20 off entire purchase  since it “removes rust and minerals from water that can dull color, and deposit on blondes making them dark and muddy.” (We’ve tried it, and it also made our hair super soft.)
