For many women, mascara is a beauty must-have, a product they wear day in and day out that makes their eyes look bigger and brighter. The right mascara has the ability to darken eyelashes while adding thickness and length. Cosmetic manufacturers have produced a dizzying array of mascaras that promise all sorts of magical results. So why is it that so many of these products flake, smudge, run and clump?

Makeup artist Michael Moore, who runs Simply Moore Studio in Cherry Creek North, has tried every brand and seen the changes in brushes, wands and tubes through the years. He shares some tips about selecting and applying the product.

1. Go big. Volumizing mascara gives you longer and fuller-looking lashes. One of Moore’s favorites is L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara. He also likes Maybelline Lash Stiletto. He finds Maybelline Great Lash overrated.

2. Wear waterproof mascara only in special situations, such as ” if you are going to cry, swim or sweat profusely,” Moore says. A brand that won’t smudge when wet is Blinc, Moore says. It will form tubes around your eyelashes and come off easily with water.

3. Black is basic, but colors have their place. Black is the best mascara shade to open the eye and create a fuller-looking set of lashes. Women with blonde or lighter-colored lashes who want a natural look can wear brown mascara. Moore recommends that women over 40 try blue mascara. “It gives a rested look to the eye,” he says, and isn’t as harsh-looking as black.

4. When applying mascara, curl lashes first. Apply mascara starting at the root, then pull the wand through the rest of the lashes to the tip. Use two or three coats for a more dramatic look. Don’t pump your mascara wand into the tube. This will push in air and rapidly dry out your product. And avoid wearing mascara that looks dry and/or clumpy.

5. Finally, never share mascara. This is a common mistake that can quickly lead to a visit to the doctor’s office.

Nearly a year ago, I started growing out my hair. Not that I realized it at the time. It began with one skipped trip to the barber, then another, and another, until I’d gone from high and tight to decidedly shaggy. By month three, I decided to roll with it, despite the fact that I was smack in the middle of what can only be described as “an awkward stage.” It’s a stage all growers must grapple with, and is not without its trials.

But, I made it through and am now 11 months into my follicular journey. Things are less awkward, and I’m able to share a few lessons I’ve learned along the way. It’s been frustrating at times, but if you’re thinking about growing your own hair out, this will make the process (or the decision) much easier.

Start with Separation The last thing you want is an accidental mullet, so it’s best to start with it longer on top. I was lucky that my accidental foray into long hair-dom started this way, but if you’ve got the same length all over, you’d do well to keep it tight at the sides and back until you’ve got a few inches of growth up top. Then you can go ahead and let it flow.

There are Many Awkward Stages Each month is a new and different adventure in unruliness. It starts when your hair begins to creep over your ears, prompting the inevitable, Time for a cut, eh? from friends and family. It only gets worse once your hair hits medium length, around three or four inches at the sides. If you’ve got even a bit of waviness to your hair—and most men do—it starts to wing out, making your head look like it’s trying, however unsuccessfully, to take flight. 

But Some are Worse Than Others The initial shag and the “flying nun” stage were the worst for me. Luckily, there are moments of relative respite in-between. Once it’s past clipper-length around the ears, you can simply push your hair back with a bit of product and it’ll look presentable for a while. And once those wings get long enough, they’ll be pulled down by their own weight (a little pomade helps things along until the hair does the work itself). Cherish these moments. They’ll help give you the strength to keep going when all seems lost. 

Avoid Stress This is true for all aspects of life, but here, I’m talking about things that will cause undue stress to your newly elongated locks. That means no rough towel-drying. Instead of the back-and-forth motion you’ve used since childhood, you’ll need to grab sections of your hair with the towel and gently squeeze out the excess moisture. Also to be avoided is blow-drying, which may be necessary in emergencies—long hair takes more time to dry than you might think possible—but can make strands weaker. Also, no brushing when wet. It’s a quick and easy recipe for breakage, which is obviously not what you’re going for. 

Shampoo Less, Condition More, Cut Occasionally  If you’re like most men, your shampoo schedule is a mess. Get it right. If you’re doing it on the daily, stop. Over-shampooed hair is dry, dry hair is weak, and long hair needs strength. So focus on conditioning to build that strength. You can do it daily, but keep the shampoo regimen to two or three times a week at most. And when it comes to trimming, shoot for every two to three months. You’re aiming for enough maintenance to stave off split ends and keep the shape presentable without curtailing your progress. 

Switch Up Your Products Pomades, waxes, pastes—these are all designed for short hair. Once you’ve got the extra length, you’ll need to switch to a grooming cream, a serum, or a leave-in conditioner to tame your mane. Color expert Marcy Cona, Creative Director of Color & Style at Clairol, offers guidance on how to choose a new hair color based on your skin tone. Lindsay Mueller: Why does it matter to choose a hair color based on your skin tone?Marcy Cona: Your skin tone is the framework to your hair, so you want to make sure your skin tone and hair color complement one another. The right combination of skin tone and hair color shade can define your look.

LM: How do you determine what hair color is best? What are some important considerations?MC: First, you need to decide what your overall skin tone is before deciding on the right hair color. To find your skin tone, I recommend doing the following:

• Stand in natural light, wearing neutral or white colored clothing
• Use a hand mirror to look at your face, and keep in mind you shouldn’t have any makeup on at all
• Observe the tone or hue of your skin. Does it have warm, yellow or reddish tones or do you have cool, neutral or pinkish tones?

Keep in mind your personal skin tone may have many variations. However, you should focus on the most distinct tone versus the minor variations.

LM: How does eye color complement different hair colors?MC: Your eye color defines your facial features, hair and hair color. Generally, you should select your hair color using the same tonality as your eye hue.

LM: When it comes to hair/skin tone contrast, what are some guidelines to keep in mind?MC: The stronger the contrast between your hair color and skin tone, the more dramatic your overall look will appear. If you choose a hair color that is close in tone to your eye color, your combination of hair color and eye color will have a blended natural look.

LM: Should you change your makeup routine in conjunction with a change in hair color?MC: Yes, you should always adjust your makeup when you make a dramatic or subtle change to your hair color. If you make a big change in your hair color shade, you also may want to change your foundation color and eye makeup. If your change is subtle, you could adjust with new blush or bronzer to complement your new hair color.

LM: Is there ever a good time to rock gray or white hair?MC: Gray hair is tricky, I feel very few women can “rock it” because as hair becomes gray, the strands of hair have a dull, flat and unhealthy look to them. If you are lucky enough to have gray hair with an overall cool tone, and a healthy shiny quality, it can work for you. If your gray hair has a dullness or yellow cast, it is really best to color your hair with a light neutral shade to give you shine and contrast to your skin tone.

LM: What skin undertones does red hair work best on?MC: For warm red shades like strawberry red, the best undertones would be warm, like yellow. For cool bright reds, a pink or blue undertone work best.

LM: What skin undertones does blonde hair work best on?MC: For cool neutral blondes, the best skin tone would be pink, cool undertones.
(And the reverse is the same: If you have skin with pink, cool undertones, the best shade would be cool neutral blonde.)

For warm buttery blondes, skin tones with yellow, olive or warm undertones work best.
(Same here, the inverse is true: For blondes with warm, yellow, or olive undertones, the best shade would be a warm buttery blonde.)

LM: What skin undertones does black hair work best on?MC: Cool undertones such as blue, or pink, are the most dramatic for black hair color.

LM: What skin undertones does dark brown hair work best on?MC: Cool undertones work best, however you can also have a tan and still enjoy dark brown hair!

LM: What skin undertones does light brown hair work best on?MC: If you have golden warm yellow to your skin undertones, a light golden brown shade can work perfectly! If your skin tone is more neutral, you can choose a natural to cool light brown.
