Waxing at home is not that complicated and once you get used to it, it can turn out to be a really good hair removal method. I’ve tried it and if it weren’t for epilators, I would have chosen waxing as my fix for unwanted hair.
Even if it’s simple to wax at home, I think every woman needs to be reminded of some simple tips for silky smooth at-home waxing sessions.
These tips are especially helpful if you want your at-home waxing experiences to be completely satisfying. Not in ingrown hairs, left-behind hairs or broken hairs at the surface of the skin.
essential waxing tips

1. Buy a Good At-Home Waxing Kit

The first of the 7 waxing tips is to buy a great wax for hair removal. Why is this the most important step? Because a good wax removes all the hairs from the root from a single pass, without little or no hairs left after you quickly pull that strip.
If half of the hairs remain on your body once you pull that strip of wax then you need to simply throw it in the garbage and buy yourself a proper waxing kit for home usage.
I’ve written two excellent posts with wonderful suggestions. One is about the top 3 at home waxing kits, while the other focuses on the best wax for hair removal.

2. Exfoliate Before Each Waxing Session

One of the most important things to remember is to always exfoliate before waxing.

Exfoliation helps prevent ingrown hairs by removing the layer of dead cells or dead skin, as it’s also called. Legs are the no. 1 target for ingrown hairs so a body scrub or an exfoliating glove should be your best friends.
But don’t only exoliate before a session and then let the exfoliating glove/body scrub slip your mind. Exfoliate at least 2-3 times a week. I’m doing it whenever I take a shower, daily. I guarantee that you’re going to like it. Your legs have never felt so good.

3. Use Baby Powder Before Waxing

Once you’re done exfoliating, use baby powder on the skin area that’s about to be waxed.
Baby powder absorbs any existent moisture, which will enable the waxing to properly adhere to your skin.

4. Make Sure that the Hair has the Proper Length

What does it mean? For the wax to grab the hairs and remove the majority of them from the first pass, they must be neither too short nor too long. Between 1/4 inch and 3/4 inch long.
I would approximate that you would end up waxing once every 3 weeks. When I was waxing, that was the time frame for me.But it depends.
If you’re new to waxing you will figure out how much time you have to wait before your hairs have the proper waxing length.

5. Test the Temperature of the Wax

You definitely should test it if we’re talking about hard wax. If it’s too hot it’s definitely not good. You need the right temperature, supportable warm is how I would describe it.
If you’re using cold wax strips then it goes without saying that there are no risks.
However, the majority of women prefer hard wax and that’s why I insist that testing the temperature of the wax is one of the most important tips for successful at-home waxing.

6. Remove the Hair in the Right Direction while Keeping the Skin Taut

This one is another essential waxing tip.
The right direction would be to pull the wax strip against the direction of the hair growth.
Apply the wax in the direction of the hair growth and pull in the opposite direction in a quick move, while keeping the skin taut, stretched.
Pull without any hesitations. Otherwise not all the hairs will be pulled from the root. You want the hairs glued to the wax strip for silky smooth skin.
You’ve probably heard that it’s not advised to wax the same skin portion twice. I don’t know why that is. I use cold facial wax strips and I always apply two strips on each of my upper lip portions and nothing has ever happened to my upper lip. And facial skin is pretty sensitive.
Try it once and see how it goes. I’m lazy and I don’t like using the tweezers if 2 or 3 hairs remain so I apply another facial wax strip instead.
Another thing that I should mention is that if it’s your first at-home waxing experience then you should have someone help you. If you’ve waxed before and the pain is not a problem for you anymore you should be able to pull the strip quickly without hesitations.
But if you plan on waxing your bikini area then you might need help reaching every place that you plan on having hair-free. So in those cases, a girlfriend would be of much help. Unless you are insanely flexible.
For removing any wax residues you can use cooking oil, either vegetable or olive oil. It works perfectly.
Baby oil is just as helpful in removing wax residues and it’s also a very good moisturizer.

If you plan on using baby oil to remove the wax residues, you can skip the 7th tip entirely. You are moisturizing and cleaning your skin with the same product.

7. Moisturize

So we’ve reached the last tip for an amazing at home waxing experience each and every single time.

Using a moisturizer is a tip valid for shaving, epilation, and of course waxing. Basically, you can use any moisturizer that you prefer.
These are my seven tips for waxing at home. What’s your favorite? Just let me know in the comments bellow.

6 EXPERT TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT FACIAL OIL

In case you couldn’t tell from our roundup of February’s best beauty launches—or our latest logo design—we’re totally crazy about facial oils right now.

Not only do they make killer cleansers, moisturizers, and spot treatments, but they’re beneficial for every skin type, from dry and sensitive to—yes, really—oily and acne prone.

The only part that’s not ideal: Sifting through all of the seemingly awesome options in this huge beauty category to find the best one for you. (Can someone invent a Tinder for skin care, already?)

In search of some guidance, we turned to natural beauty activist Jessica Assaf, co-editor of clean skin-care blog BeautyLiesTruth and co-founder of Raw is Everything, a newly launched line of organic, cold-pressed, unrefined, single-ingredient skin oils ($45-$55). “Facial oils can do everything we want in a skin-care routine,” she says. “You’ve just got to know your ingredients and where they come from to experience really remarkable results.”

Keep reading to learn how to read a face oil label like a pro, and you’ll be swiping right on your perfect match in no time.

Raw is Everything oils

1. Shop for oils like you’d shop for juice

The first thing to look for, says Assaf, is an oil that’s cold-pressed, unrefined, and organic—for all the same reasons you’d seek those things out in a kale/apple/lemon blend. “Cold-pressed oils have 700 percent more bioactive compounds than those conventionally extracted with heat,” she says, adding that it’s important to go organic to avoid pesticides. To ensure those clean and potent ingredients stay that way, look for oils bottled in dark glass. “Exposure to light and heat will damage the oil,” Assaf explains.

2. Do the sight-and-smell test

Not sure if an oil is unrefined? When in doubt, sniff it out. “A lot of oils say they’re organic, but if the color is really light and you can’t smell the oil, it’s likely refined and you’re losing the majority of the benefits,” says Assaf. “Also, if the oil has an expiration date of five years, you know it’s not unrefined.” Yes, that means you should be reading the labels on your beauty bottles like you do your almond milk.

3. Consider your skin type

This is advice worth memorizing: Assaf says those with oily skin should opt for a dry oil like rosehip or jojoba, while dry skin is best served by something richer, like passion fruit seed or marula oil. And if you’re battling inflamed or sensitive skin, tamanu oil is tops. “It’s been used for hundreds of years by Polynesian women to clear acne and reduce the appearance of scars,” she explains, adding that it’s also good for eczema and redness. “It’s a richer oil, so it works best as night treatment.”
Those with oily skin should opt for rosehip or jojoba, while dry skin is best served by passion fruit seed or marula oil.

4. Think about what’s going on after

“Once you start layering you have to think about how all of the ingredients are interacting,” says Assaf, who notes that unfavorable interactions can cancel out each individual product’s positive effects. That includes sunscreen, the healthy girl’s daily staple. The good news: Certain single-ingredient oils, like Raw is Everything’s raspberry seed Antioxidant Treatment ($45), may offer serious UV protection and can be used on their own to both moisturize and protect. Although it’s not FDA-approved like a traditional sunscreen, Assaf cites a scientific journal article that indicates raspberry seed oil could have a natural SPF of 30 to 50, and carrot seed oil could have a natural SPF of 38 to 40. If it saves us a minute in the morning, we’ll take it.

5. Avoid red-flag fillers

According to Assaf, water is often the first ingredient in commercial face oils—and if that seems counterproductive, well, it is. “That means the product needs tons of very strong preservatives because water [breeds] mold,” she says. She also warns against buying oils that are petroleum-derived—telltale ingredients include petrolatum and mineral oil—or that have grape seed oil high on the list. “Grape seed oil is cooking oil. It’s not going to have the most [topical] benefits,” she explains. “Look for oils where the [active] ingredient is the first ingredient.”

6. Seek out short ingredient lists

You might think the more oils in a blend, the better, but Assaf stresses that three or less is usually best. “It’s a question of dilution,” she says. “When you think about a product with, say, 22 different oils in it, what’s the majority made up of?” She notes that long ingredient lists can also prove problematic for sensitive skin. “If you have an allergic reaction to a product and there are 10 ingredients in it, you have no idea what you’re allergic to,” she says. “Over 50 percent of women claim they have sensitive skin, so this is a huge issue.” If that’s the case for you, she recommends choosing a single oil and using it in isolation for two weeks to find out how it impacts your skin. And If it doesn’t work for you, drop it like a bad dating app and move on to the next one.

Top Tips for the Smoothest Bikini Waxing

We can’t lie, bikini waxing for the first time is quite a painful process, but we do promise that over time each subsequent waxing gets less painful as the hairs become thinner and easier to extract.
Bikini Wax
Bikini Waxing
For the best results from your bikini wax, we recommend you follow our top tips:
Choose your time wisely
Whilst certain types of bikini wax can be done when you are on your period, you may find that your pain threshold is much lower at this time of the month.  It may be better to schedule your bikini waxing at a different time of your cycle.
If you’re having a bikini wax to surprise your partner or prior to going on holiday, you may want to have the treatment a few days in advance so that the area isn’t still sore.
Have the right length of hair
Don’t be tempted to cut, trim or shave your bikini line too much just prior to a waxing.  For the best (and least painful) results hair should be around 1cm, any shorter and the hairs are less likely to be pulled out with ease, any longer and it will be more painful to pull the hairs out and you may  prolong the treatment because your technician will have to trim the area for you.
Take painkillers
Some women swear by taking a pain killer such as a paracetamol or ibuprofen around an hour before their appointment.  Obviously this won’t completely erase any pain, but it will make it more bearable.
Decide on the type of bikini wax you want beforehand
If you’re a little unsure of how much hair you want to remove, we recommend starting slowly and building your way up to a full Brazilian or Hollywood bikini wax.  You will become more tolerant to the pain and you’ll get used to seeing yourself with less hair ‘down there’.  However, if you choose to have it all removed then remind yourself that the whole process will only take around 30 minutes from start to finish!
Don’t exfoliate
Exfoliating after a bikini wax is very important, but doing so beforehand will only serve to irritate the skin even more than necessary.
Wear comfortable knickers
Your newly wax bikini area may sting and smart a little after your first waxing, so wearing soft cotton underwear will help to banish any further irritants.  Choose underwear that is easy to move to the side if you’re opting for a standard or extended bikini wax.
Try to avoid wearing jeans, tights or other clothing that is tight around your bikini area straight after as it may chafe.

5 TIPS TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT MOISTURIZER

You may think that all moisturizers are the same-it’s just a cream that you put on your face to keep it hydrated, right? Not exactly! There is such a wide variety of moisturizing products, and they all feel, smell and provide different skin benefits. So how should you choose the best one for you? Follow thexcse tips below to find the one for you!

1. Consider Your Skin Type

Is your skin dry, oily, normal or a combination of types? Are you acne-prone or have sensitive skin? The answers to those questions should determine which type of moisturizer you pick because different products are formulated for different skin types.

2. Think about Texture

The texture of a good moisturizer for you is also related to your skin type. Normal skin does best with a light, non-greasy moisturizer, while dry skin may need a heavier, creamier formula that is more likely to “lock in” moisture. Take notice of not only the texture of the product in the container but how it feels on your face after you apply it.

3. Check Its Scent

Your moisturizer literally will be right next to your nose whenever you apply it, so its scent is important. For that reason alone, it’s worth shopping at an establishment where you can sample different types of moisturizer or at least unscrew the containers to take a whiff. And if you have acne-prone or sensitive skin, try to avoid any scented moisturizers with fragrances or perfumes.

4. Use SPF

Do you apply sunscreen every day? You probably already know that this is an important step in your skincare routine. The best way to combat skin damage from the sun’s UV rays is to put on sunscreen every day. That’s where your moisturizer can come in — try choosing a moisturizer with an SPF 15 or higher and apply it every day as directed.

5. Read Labels

The label on any skin product may seem completely unintelligible, but you can learn a lot from reading it closely. Specifically, look for moisturizers that are labeled “allergy tested” (less likely to cause allergic reactions) and “non-comedogenic” (less likely to clog pores). These labels don’t guarantee that a moisturizer won’t irritate your skin, but they are a solid starting point for most people.

Finding the perfect moisturizer can be a challenge. Oftentimes, consumers will get there with some trial-and-error, which works differently for each individual. We recommend using these 5 easy tips to find the perfect moisturizer for you.

Perfectly smooth skin requires sacrifice. To me even the word “waxing” sounds like a painful process causing me restlessness. I haven’t waxed in a zillion years mainly because I am a chicken, the thought of it scares me to death but also because I didn’t have time to go to a beauty salon and see a professional. At home waxing is out of question, I’ll most likely end up in the ER if I’d do it myself. So I turned to a beautician for some waxing tips before attempting to visit them for a session and get my legs all prettied up.
To turn waxing into a less stressful experience, it is necessary to consider some basic waxing tips anyone can easily follow apparently. These waxing tips will help significantly reduce pain, prevent ingrown hairs, irritation and other unpleasant effects that most women face often.
Here’s 5 waxing tips my beautician advises to obey to:
  • Choose the most efficient method. Plucking unwanted hair is painful, but the results are long lasting compared to using a razor or creams. Over time, your hair will thin and grow slower and will also have a lighter color and uprooting them will be less painful. An essential rule is to not use the razor blade between two waxing. Hmm…guilty as charged.
  • Avoid hair ingrown. Hair growing under skin is one of the unpleasant consequences of waxing. To prevent this it’s necessary to exfoliate prone areas every time you bathe. Use a sponge to scrub and massage delicate skin surface on legs, hands and armpits which are the most prone areas of your body

  • Get rid of irritation. After each hair removal, skin is very sensitive. The pores are left open after waxing and can become inflamed or even infected in some cases. Therefore you need to treat your skin gently and avoid applying body lotions or creams, especially those with an intense fragrance, immediately after waxing. Instead use specially designed gels or natural oils such as the olive, argan, coconut.
  • Exfoliate prior waxing. Removing dead skin cells through exfoliation gives you more effective waxing. The short or ingrown hairs will be exposed and removed easier through waxing. This is an excellent product: Tree Hut Coconut Lime Body Scrub
  • Feel less pain. Hair waxing after a bath is apparently one of the basic rules I had no idea about, that can significantly reduce pain. Due to hot water, the pores open and pulling out the hair through waxing is less painful. It totally makes sense.
Do you have any waxing tips you’re willing to share? I’d love to hear them and get ready for my next waxing session.

Most decisions in life are difficult enough without having to add finding the right cleanser for your skin type to the pile. With the millions of formulas and ingredients out there, how do you really know which one best suits your skin? And we all know that the proper cleansing routine is the foundation for a flawless complexion. To help you skip over the whole trial-and-error ordeal, we’ve put together an all-inclusive guide to finding “the one” that will keep your complexion clean and happy!

cleanser types
Dry Skin Cleansers
When it comes to your dry skin, you want to look for a cleansing formula that will help your complexion retain moisture — that’s why a creamy or oil-based wash like Lancôme Crème Douceur (cream-to-oil) or Garnier Skin Care Clean+ Nourishing Cleansing Oil is ideal for your skin type. An added bonus is a cleanser containing the hydrating properties of hyaluronic acid — as it can draw in water to lock in moisture for ultimate relief from dryness. And as much as you love to lather, avoid foaming washes as they can strip your skin of natural moisture and cause irritation.

Oily Skin Cleansers
Get rid of that slick by using a deep cleansing gel or foaming wash like Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash to gently lift away dirt and oil without stripping your skin (which could cause it to kick into overdrive and produce more oil!). A soap-free cleansing foam like The Body Shop Seaweed Deep Cleansing Facial Wash is strong enough to eliminate all traces of makeup and leave skin feeling perfectly fresh, without the tight feeling left behind by harsher cleansers. Another great way to keep oil at bay is by introducing a Clarisonic into your cleansing routine and using it twice a day (or more if you exercise regularly).

Combination Skin Cleansers
So, your skin isn’t dry OR oily — it’s both! If you don’t want to use two different cleansers on separate facial areas (we don’t blame you!) there are gel cleansers that are gentle enough to treat dry skin and efficient enough to buff away impurities and unclog pores. Try an oil-free wash like L’Oréal Paris Ideal Clean All Skin Types Foaming Gel Cleanser or Garnier Skin Care Clean+ Purifying Foam Cleanser for a customized cleanse that works to balance skin without over drying!

Sensitive Skin Cleansers
Whether your concern is rosacea or your skin just turns red to the touch, a cleanser with non-irritating ingredients is what your complexion needs. Condition your skin with a non-lathery, cream cleanser containing mild plant oils like sweet almond, jojoba or soothing orange oil like the SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser. To calm sensitive skin, look for a paraben-free, fragrance-free cleanser that contains glycerin (we love Vichy Pureté Thermale 3-in-1 Cleansing Solution), which works to attract just the right amount of moisture to keep skin hydrated and refreshed.

Acne-Prone Skin Cleansers
You want a cleanser that will not only give your skin a deep clean, but also works to help treat the source of your problem — acne. Using a medicated cleanser like La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser with salicylic acid and lipo hydroxy acid will fight the production of excess oil to gently remove dirt and visibly clear acne breakouts. Try using the product twice daily for best results, or several times a week (using a mild cleanser daily) if your skin is sensitive.

Whether or not there are universal truths in the world is a topic of hot philosophical debate. Science tells us that there are many occurrences in the natural world that remain unexplainable or relative, therefore theories are constructed to explain, predict, and master phenomena. We know what you are thinking: how is all this science mumbo jumbo going to help me get beautiful hair every time I try and style it? Ahh, great minds think alike. So now is when we shall impart upon you a hairstyling truth we hold to be self-evident: there are certain methods and no-fail tricks to hairstyling that professional stylists use in order to create beautiful hair every time they touch it and we think every woman should know these tricks. Skip to see the hairstyling tricks now.

Just like the famous astronomer Edwin Hubble once wrote, "Equipped with his five senses, man explores the world around him and calls the adventure Science," we say, "Equipped with her seven must-know styling tips and techniques, woman explores the world of hairstyles around her and calls the adventure Beauty." Are these words of wisdom as profound as Mr. Hubble's? Maybe not. Are they as true? Abso-hair-flippin'-lutely. Knowing how to properly do the basics of hairstyling is important for achieving beautiful hair or "mastering the phenomenon," if you will. Every time you reach for that flat iron, blow dryer or fine-toothed comb, you should feel confident that you are using the right techniques to style your hair. While you may think you know "Hairstyling 101," everyone can learn a thing or two from a professional stylist's theories on beautiful hair methods.

The wise professors of hairstyling -- aka the celebrity hairstylists we picked up our styling tricks from are Dickey, founder of the Hair Rules salon and product line who has worked with everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker to Rihanna, and Tommy Buckett from the Marie Robinson salon in New York City. With their help, these two experts of styling will give you a Master's in hairstyling. See the seven tricks that they think every woman (who wants beautiful hair) should know.
